If readers cannot find your blog post, you have a 0% chance of converting visitors based off your glorious prose.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most effective strategies to ensure that readers are finding your material is optimizing your blog posts for specific search terms &#8211; so when people search those terms, your blog post shows up, and interested readers can find exactly what they are looking for. This can be even more beneficial than social shares or paid marketing because once content is ranked highly, it continues to generate traffic indefinitely. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally speaking, optimizing a blog post for SEO is pretty straightforward. This checklist ensures that you don\u2019t neglect the simple stuff. Once you check everything on this list, you can feel confident that when you press that \u201cPublish\u201d button, your blog post is certain to attract and convert more visitors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2154 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/qualaroo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Screen-Shot-2017-10-09-at-2.03.54-PM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2017-10-09 at 2.03.54 PM\" width=\"410\" height=\"489\"><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Before_We_Get_Started_Make_Your_Life_Easy_-_Use_Yoast\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before We Get Started: Make Your Life Easy &#8211; Use Yoast<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I highly recommend using the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yoast WordPress Plugin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a kind of built in checklist on your blog. As you write, Yoast will alert you when you have done something well, and will let you know what you still need to add to fully optimize your post. You will then be able to update the blog post either using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scalahosting.com\/blog\/shared-hosting-vs-managed-wp-hosting\/\">WP hosting<\/a> or through the Yoast plugin &#8211; where you can set focus keywords, write titles and meta-descriptions, add breadcrumbs and more. If you intend to lean towards content marketing as a lead generation strategy, I would recommend investing in Yoast Premium, otherwise the free version will work just fine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2155 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/qualaroo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Screen-Shot-2017-10-09-at-2.04.52-PM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2017-10-09 at 2.04.52 PM\" width=\"755\" height=\"262\"><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Essential_SEO_Checklist\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Essential SEO Checklist<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Turn the Yoast plugin green. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start by adding at least one \u201cfocus keyword\u201d to the bottom of your blog post, and then just do what Yoast tells you to do &#8211; make all of the red dots turn green. This will cover a lot of bases, however it is not fully exhaustive.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Choose a Category<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the blog post (and uncheck \u201cuncategorized\u201d). <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Create a URL<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that includes the focus keyword.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Write a Title<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the article that includes the focus keyword.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Write a Meta Description<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Google looks at this description to know what the page is about. This also creates an opportunity to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pitch <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the page since the meta description shows up in the preview when the page is shared. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Optimize All Images.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For each image, make sure that you have a (1) Title (2) Alt Description (3) Caption (if possible), all (or many) of which should include the focus keyword. Make sure the images are sized well and are not too large or heavy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Add a Featured Image<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This image will be the preview that shows up on Facebook, Twitter, and any other social media platform that you share to. Make sure to resize the image so that it does not get cropped oddly. Garrett Heath at Rackspace recommends using 1600px by 800px images, leaving 160px of padding at both ends as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rackspace.com\/image-size-specs-across-social-media\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one-size-fits all image <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to make sure the image displays well on both Twitter and Facebook. (Note, with Yoast Premium you can add individual images for both Facebook and Twitter previews).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2156 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/qualaroo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Screen-Shot-2017-10-09-at-2.06.24-PM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2017-10-09 at 2.06.24 PM\" width=\"753\" height=\"419\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure you have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/linkstorm.io\/resources\/internal-links-vs-external-links\">Internal and External Links<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the page &#8211; but they should not divert the focus from the keywords. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure you have <\/span><b>Subheadings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to break up sections. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See if there is an opportunity to incorporate a <\/span><b>\u201cfeatured snippet\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into your blog posts. A featured snippet is a summary answer to a user\u2019s query (see picture below). SEO is a combination of clear terms (for robots as well as humans) and a great user experience.
